A Winter Wedding at Rowton Castle
Jade and Gus chose Rowton Castle in Shropshire for their winter wedding, and it couldn’t have suited them more. As a Rowton Castle wedding photographer, I’m always struck by how the venue manages to feel both grand and intimate at the same time. The castle’s warm interiors, the soft winter light and the surrounding grounds all come together to create a setting that feels timeless, romantic and full of character. Their day had that perfect mix of elegance and ease — the kind of atmosphere where everyone relaxes into the celebration.
Rowton Castle is a 17th‑century Grade II‑listed castle set within 17 acres of private grounds. Known for its dramatic red‑brick towers, landscaped gardens and beautifully preserved interiors, it’s an exclusive‑use venue where couples can enjoy complete privacy from morning preparations through to the final dance.
Morning Preparations in the Castle’s Characterful Rooms
The morning began inside the castle, where the pace was calm and unhurried. Rowton Castle is one of those venues where every room feels like part of the story — textured walls, rich colours, soft window light and historic details that add depth to every frame. Jade’s preparations took place in one of the castle’s elegant suites, where the winter light filtered gently through the windows, creating a beautifully intimate atmosphere.
Gus was getting ready elsewhere in the castle, surrounded by family and friends, and the anticipation between them built in the best possible way. One of the things I love about Rowton Castle is how close everything is without ever feeling cramped — you can move between rooms quickly, capturing both sides of the story as it unfolds.
Beautiful Morning Portraits Just Outside the Bridal Suite
One of my favourite portrait spots at Rowton Castle is surprisingly simple — the pathway just outside the bridal suite. In the morning light, it feels almost Mediterranean, with warm tones, textured stone and greenery that could easily be mistaken for a courtyard in Spain or Italy. It’s quiet, private and perfect for those calm, elegant portraits before the day begins.
Jade looked incredible here, and the setting added a softness and warmth that suited the winter light perfectly. It’s one of those locations that works in every season, but in winter it has a particularly gentle glow.
A Warm and Emotional Ceremony at Rowton Castle
Their ceremony took place inside the castle, framed by warm tones, candlelight and the kind of atmosphere that only a historic venue can offer. The ceremony room at Rowton Castle has beautifully soft, directional window light — flattering, warm and perfect for natural‑light photography.
Jade and Gus’ vows were full of emotion, laughter and the kind of connection that’s effortless to photograph. It was one of those ceremonies where every glance and every small gesture carried meaning, and the room’s intimate layout made it easy to capture those moments without distraction.

Romantic Portraits and Evening Celebrations at Rowton Castle
Soft Winter Light for Romantic Portraits
After the ceremony, we stepped outside for portraits. Even in winter, the castle grounds are stunning. The red‑brick towers, the sweeping driveway and the quiet corners of the gardens gave us a variety of backdrops without ever needing to go far.
The castle walls bounce warm tones beautifully in low winter sun, and the archways offer sheltered spots that work perfectly on colder days. Jade and Gus were brilliant together — relaxed, natural and completely themselves. That’s the beauty of Rowton Castle: it gives you space to breathe, to wander and to enjoy the moment without feeling rushed.
A Cosy and Joyful Reception
The reception carried all the warmth of the season. Guests gathered inside the castle’s cosy rooms, sharing drinks, stories and plenty of laughter. The atmosphere was lively and full of energy — the kind of environment where documentary photography thrives. Everywhere I turned, there were moments unfolding: hugs, reactions, conversations and all the little interactions that make a wedding feel alive.
A live wedding artist captured the ceremony scene as the day unfolded, which added a beautiful creative energy to the room. Guests kept drifting over to watch the painting take shape, and it became one of those small but memorable details that made the day feel even more personal.
Evening Celebrations and Sparklers
As the evening settled in, the castle took on a different kind of magic. The soft lighting, the glow from the fireplaces and the buzz of the dance floor created a perfect winter celebration. Later in the evening, Jade and Gus ended the night with a sparkler exit in the courtyard — warm lights, happy faces and that unmistakable Rowton Castle atmosphere. It was the perfect way to wrap up the celebrations.
