Jonny Draper Masterclass at Heaton House Farm
Wow, just simply — WOW!
The course was split into two days; with the first day concentrating on wedding photography techniques, with the second day focusing on the business side of the wedding photography industry.
Arriving at Heaton House farm on a very sunny morning, I was a little nervous about what was ahead of me for the next 6-7 hours – if I knew anything about Jonny and his work, I was expecting a day of dancefloor starbursts and smoke grenades… he delivered that… and then some! The ten of us were greeted with a full table of pastries and teas/coffees laid on by the lovely staff at Heaton House Farm. This was my first workshop with Jonny, but a few of photographers had met up on previous workshops and, as a result, even shot weddings together!
I was made to feel very welcome by both fellow photographers and the staff at Heaton House Farm.
The photography commenced with Wedding Preparation, all modelled amazingly by Joel Hicks and Alex Outhwaite. The gorgeous Raimon Bundo dress was supplied by LOVE Bridal Boutique (UK’s best bridal retailer 2014) and the ever-amazing Didsbury Flower Lounge supplied the gorgeous flowers. Beautiful hair and make-up by Paisley Gamble and Gemma Hallowell.
Once things were in full flow, we then took things outside with an outdoor shoot (whilst trying our best to avoid the rain/hail showers which made a habit of breaking up the day). Here we were taken to the gorgeous gardens at Heaton House Farm which are normally under lock and key, exclusively used for bride & groom shoots.
Next, we looked at venue feature work… what artistic features of the venue could we use to create amazing shots? The afternoon looked into using natural light photography, strobe photography and continuous light to generate a range of spectacular shots using different lighting techniques for different areas of the venue:
It’s at this point where I now begin to think whether I’ve missed something or not…. Hmmmm…. Oh Yeah!….
So that was that…. or so we thought… (more to come later 😉 )
Day two was a very business orientated day. You’ve shot some amazing images, now how are you going to get them out there on the World Wide T’interweb? We talked business, strategies and met up with the amazing Julia Braime from the brilliant Brides Up North who talked us through social media and blogging (that’s why I’m here! – with my very first blog post! – Thanks Julia!). Unfortunately for you, the reader, no more photos were shot on this day… we talked lots of business (and loved every second of it!).
Anyway… as no shots were taken on this day, you can have a free fire-breathing photo Joel, you multi-talented legend you!
Big thank you to the amazing Sarah Heath and the brilliant team at Heaton House Farm for their amazing hospitality throughout the two days and for also giving us the opportunity to shoot some amazing shot locations at their venue.
